By MIKE PURKEY
You might wonder what in the world K.J. Choi is holding onto when he grips his putter. It's an oversize putting grip from SuperStroke Putting Systems. The flat-sided grip is designed to relax the hands and taken them out of the putting stroke, which encourages an arm-and-shoulder action to get the ball rolling.
It's not a new idea. Fifteen or more years ago, oversized putting grips found their way to market with little success. The reason was mainly because those grips were made of a rubber compound and were just too heavy, making the clubhead feel too light.
The SuperStroke grip is made of a lightweight material that doesn't change the swingweight or overall weight of the putter. Choi put the grip in play two weeks ago when he won the AT&T National. Whatever works.
