Installation Instructions

The SuperStroke™ Putter Grip includes: (1) SuperStroke grip, (1) SuperStroke spacer rod, (1) Allen wrench

To install the SuperStroke grip, these tools are needed:

Utility knife, masking tape (or similar), tape measure, level (for use in squaring up putter face), instant glue

Take a minute to examine the SuperStroke grip and find the screw holes, which are arranged in pairs on opposite sides of the grip. You will find three pairs.

SuperStroke Installation Instructions

The uppermost pair (located approximately half way between the top and the bottom of the grip) are the positioning screws. These will be used early in the
installation process, as well as in the final installation.

Below these are the lock-down screws, used to secure the grip after you have determined the final grip position that's best for you.

Finally, near the bottom of the grip, are the piercing screws. When driven down completely, these screws will pierce the putter shaft, creating a permanent installation that conforms with USGA and R&A rules.

DO NOT tighten the piercing screws until the final step of the installation process.

SuperStroke Installation Instructions

1. REMOVE THE OLD GRIP

Start by locating a flat work surface such as a counter top. Using the utility knife, carefully slice and remove the existing grip from the putter shaft. Remove any residual double-faced tape or adhesive.

2. EXPERIMENT WITH PUTTER LENGTH
AND FLAT SIDE POSITION

Slide the SuperStroke grip over the shaft until it bottoms out. With a piece of tape, mark the shaft where it enters the grip, butting the top edge of the tape to the grip. DO NOT adjust any screws at this point. Position the index finger and middle finger of your right hand on opposite sides of the shaft. Grasp the SuperStroke grip with your left hand and assume your normal putting position. With the putter head grounded, slide the SuperStroke grip to the height that seems most comfortable.

Now, you may gently tighten the two positioning screws (the uppermost pair of screws), just enough to hold the grip in place. To ensure even pressure on both sides of the putter shaft, the screw pairs should be tightened alternately, no more than two revolutions at a time on each side.

With the grip in place, hit practice putts to confirm the best putter height for you. Re-adjust the grip as needed, carefully loosening and gently re-tightening the positioning screws just enough to hold the grip in place. Also, experiment with the grip’s flat side position – flat side up, flat side left or flat side right.

Take your time to be sure you are satisfied with your choice of putter height and flat side position. In fact, you may wish to experiment for several days with these options. With both the positioning screws (uppermost set) and the lock-down screws tightened, the grip is fully functional for practice play. However, until it is permanently installed using the piercing screws (lowermost set), it does not conform with the USGA and R&A rules.

Once you have determined your preferences for putter height and flat side position, you are ready to begin the permanent installation steps that follow, which allow the grip to conform with USGA and R&A rules.

3. INSTALL THE SPACER ROD

If, in Step 2, you have determined that your ideal putter height is greater than it would be if the grip were allowed simply to bottom out, use a second piece of tape to again mark the shaft, butting the top edge of the tape to the grip. Use a tape measure to identify the distance between the top edges of the two tape marks (if any). This measurement will be used to set the length of the spacer rod.

If putter length adjustment is not required, the spacer rod will not be used and you can proceed to the next step, Square Up the Putter Face.

The SuperStroke spacer rod has one smooth end (for insertion in putter shaft) and 19 spacer segments. Each segment represents a length adjustment of ¼”. Using the measurement above, calculate the number of segments (for example, 2” = 8 segments) and mark for cutting.

Score the spacer rod with a utility knife and snap-off unneeded material. Once the spacer rod has been cut, remove the SuperStroke grip and insert the smooth end of the spacer rod into the shaft.

Reposition the grip over the lengthened shaft and ensure again that the putter length is right for you. Remove the grip and complete the installation by applying a few drops of instant glue to the smooth (non-segmented) end of the spacer rod and inserting into the shaft. Allow adhesive to dry before proceeding with installation.

Note: USGA and R&A rules require that putter shaft extensions be “permanently” installed. Any shaft extension must reach the end of the grip, with no space or gap allowed. Filling any gap between the shaft and the end of the grip is the sole purpose of the spacer rod.

4. SQUARE UP THE PUTTER FACE

If you installed the spacer rod (Step 3), slide the grip back on and bottom it out against the spacer rod. DO NOT tighten any screws.

If you did not use the spacer rod, loosen any screws that may be holding the grip in place.

You will now square up the putter face to match the flat side position you prefer for the grip.

Option #1 – Flat Side Up

Place shaft on counter top with putter head over edge of counter and flat side of grip down. Put a book or magazine under the shaft. Rotate the putter head until vertical (down). Confirm vertical alignment by placing the level on putter face. Once you’ve ensured the alignment, tighten the positioning screws enough to maintain position. Tap grip end of putter on floor to ensure that grip is fully seated.

Option #2 – Flat Side Left

Place entire length of putter on counter top with putter face and flat side of grip down. Allow putter face to rest on a book or magazine so the shaft remains level with grip and putter face. Tighten the positioning screws enough to maintain position. Tap grip end of putter on floor to ensure that grip is fully seated.

Option #3 – Flat Side Right

Place entire length of putter on counter top with flat side of grip down. Allow shaft to rest on a book or magazine with the back side of the putter head toward the counter surface. Confirm that shaft is level and rotate the putter head until horizontal with the putter face up. Confirm horizontal alignment by placing the level on putter face. Tighten the positioning screws enough to maintain position. Tap grip end of putter on floor to ensure that grip is fully seated.

Note: Options #2 and #3 are for right-handed club. Reverse for left-handed club.

5. FINAL INSTALLATION

The last step in the installation process includes fully tightening all screws. First, double-check the squareness of the putter face. Once this is confirmed, you may use the Allen wrench to tighten, in order, the positioning screws (the uppermost pair of screws), then the lock-down screws (the middle pair of screws). Fully tighten both the positioning and lock-down screw pairs as much as necessary to provide a secure installation of the grip, but take care not to over-tighten. To ensure even pressure on both sides of the putter shaft, the screw pairs should be tightened alternately, no more than two revolutions at a time on each side.

Now you are ready to make the grip fully conform to USGA and R&A rules by tightening the piercing screws, located near the bottom of the grip. These should be tightened alternately, no more than two revolutions at a time on each side, until a small “pop” is heard or felt, indicating that the screw tip has pierced the surface of the putter shaft. Finally, the piercing screw holes must be filled with instant glue. This ensures that the grip position cannot be changed during a round of play, in conformity with USGA and R&A rules.

Should you wish to retain the ability to adjust the grip at a later date, you may opt to simply snug the piercing screws to the shaft, without piercing it and without using the glue. Not piercing and not using the glue, however, will not conform with USGA or R&A rules.
